Have your insurance paperwork up to date and in the car. I would recommend to get road side assistance of some sort. We personally use AAA. it is a life saver and it has come in handy many times and it does pay for itself.
Keep your car in good working order! Keep the gas tank above 1/4 of a tank always! Have regular tune ups and check the tire pressure and tire tread on your cars at least monthly.
This is not a complete list. As per where you live, the weather you personally have. The roads you drive, the traffic you are in. You have to think and plan and add what you need to your car. EACH car in your household needs to have a emergency kit in it.
Why you need an emergency kit for each car. You never know when there are roads closed, a bad accident, bad snow storm, bad rain storm, flooding, car breaks down. There are many reasons to have one, so why not.
Now there are many tool kits for cars you can buy. Gather what you have and see what else you need. Everything you need should fit into a duffel bag, rubber tub, backpack that can be left in the trunk of the car.
Info from all over.. and again My personal thoughts
